Davidson's Furniture Store has been in the Davidson
family for four generations. The store was begun by Mike Davidson's
Great-Grandfather and Grand-Uncle who came to the United States from
Scotland in the 1870's. First generation Grandfather Alexander and
first generation Great Uncle Adam were originally involved with a
business in Elmira. In 1876 they came to Hornell to buy a Martin
Adsit Dry Goods Company. This Dry Goods Company evolved into the
Davidson's Furniture Store we know today. Grand-Uncle Adam had two sons, Alexander and Adam Davidson. They worked for their father and were also joined by another partner, Mr. Babcock. The business then became known as Babcock & Davidson. Eventually Mr. Babcock was bought out, and in May of 1921, the second generation business became known as A. Davidson & Brothers. In 1952, third generation Adam Davidson joined the family business. During his tenure the business retained the corporate name A. Davidson & Brothers, but began doing business as "Davidson's Furniture." In 1978 Davidson's Furniture was joined by Adam's son, Mike. Mike's addition marked the fourth generation of Davidson family men to make a career in the retail furniture industry! Mike has taken the store into the 21st century and looks forward to welcoming many new customers to his already well developed customer base. |
